Children and young people across Wales deserve to feel hopeful about the future. But right now, there are many who don’t.
We’re here to help you, and children and young people across Wales, feel safer, happier, healthier and more hopeful.
There are many ways we can help you and your children. We know that sometimes parents and children need a space to talk, so our family wellbeing service supports families to share their feelings and work through challenges, helping them resolve conflict. And if you're a young person who's recently left the care system and moving to live independently, things might feel overwhelming. But we can pair you with mentors, help you build your confidence, and make a network of friends so you can thrive in adulthood. We give young carers who look after others support and guidance to make sure they can live their life to the full, whatever that means to them.
We want to be there for families in Wales who need us. It might be through our services supporting people facing a particular challenge, or by offering guidance and advice.
I'm a parent or carer
We know looking after your family can be tough sometimes. Whether you need help from a local service for your child, or want to read useful guidance and support, we’ve got your back.
I’m a young person
Does it ever feel like you’re carrying a weight on your shoulders? Whether you need advice, guidance or practical support, we’ve got you.
I’m interested in fostering or adoption
Imagine finally feeling like you belong. If you want to give a child a loving home where they can thrive, we are here to support you on your journey.
Let’s make things work better for children, young people and families across Wales.
We try to get the voices of children, young people and families heard by the people who make decisions that affect them. To change lives, we need to change laws. We work closely with Welsh Government and the Welsh Parliament/Senedd Cymru to help children and young people across Wales feel safer, happier, healthier and more hopeful.
Barnardo's Cymru Corporate Parenting Charter
Barnardo’s Cymru is held accountable by Welsh Government to safeguard the rights of care experienced children and young people by becoming Corporate Parents for the Corporate Parenting Charter.
The parenting charter is set up by Welsh Government to ensure public sector bodies support, safeguard and promote the rights of care experienced children and young people as they leave care. The charter contains a list of promises and principles which was a collaboration with care experienced young people.
We believe all children and young people should grow up safe, happy, healthy, and hopeful. Much of our daily work already embeds these principles and promises, so our services have mapped the ones we already meet, whether or not they specifically work with care experienced children and young people.
We are thrilled to be a Corporate Parent and to be held accountable by Welsh Government ensuring care experienced children and young people have the same rights and experiences as other children and young people in Cymru.
More information about Barnardo’s Cymru services and the principles we meet can be found on this Padlet page.
“'Corporate Parenting’ is about wanting the best for a child, to see that child flourish with good health, to be safe and happy, to do well at school and enjoy good relationships with their peers and contribute to their community. To make the most of leisure opportunities, hobbies and interests, and to grow towards adulthood equipped to lead an independent life and make their way as adults through education, good careers and jobs, and to be financially secure.”
Eluned Morgan AS/MS Prif Weinidog Cymru/First Minister of Wales, Welsh Government
