What we do
Upside is the national throughcare service available in all parts of Scotland for people who are serving a custodial sentence of 4 years or less or are remanded in custody. There are eight charities involved in the delivery of the programme, Barnardos being one of these partners. Upside provides people with the support they need to transition from short term custody, or remand to community life. The service is voluntary, and Upside will support people with any issues they may have on release like health, housing, finance or accessing wider community services. As well as helping with immediate challenges people may face, Upside will also help establish the long terms supports people need to re-build their lives with dignity and purpose. People can be supported for up to 12 months.

- Our work in this areas aims to reduce the risk of children and young people offending and engaging in anti-social behaviour. We offer one-to-one intensive support, mentoring, diversionary and preventative activities and provide advice to support them to make positive choices so they and their families can feel safer, happier, healthier and more hopeful.

- Leaving home can be a challenge for anyone, but it can be even tougher if you’re a young person leaving care. We support young people with their transition to independent living, by offering advice, supported lodgings and help getting a job.
