I am sure that like me, many of you are watching the news and videos on social media, which show the violence in Northern Ireland over the past week.
I have been feeling a mixture of emotions, mostly frustration, confusion, worry and anger. It hurts me to see what is happening in our wee country, a place I love so dearly.
Last night I thought about the people who went to work yesterday, to serve our communities, keep us safe and help us get to school and work. I thought about the people waiting at home for them, their children, partners, brothers, sisters and parents. Their families.
Thankfully, most of you are too young to remember the conflict of our past, but you all know the lasting trauma it has left in our communities and our families. I want to reassure you that this recent violence does not define what it means to be from Northern Ireland, and there will be better days ahead.
Northern Ireland is a small country with an abundance of diverse culture, music and arts. We have an identity of our own and thanks to many of you, that is an identity we can be proud of.
There are so many fantastic community organisations and youth groups in your local area, who can provide you with the support, advice and means to achieve your dreams and ambitions. If you or your family are affected in any way by the recent events, please reach out – we are here for you.
Barnardo’s NI, along with our fellow children’s charities and community organisations will always make sure that young people are listened to, that your voice and needs are heard. We want to work with you and give you the best possible chance to build the life and future you want.
To the politicians, media, community leaders, parents and caregivers of Northern Ireland – we need to keep working together to do better for our children and young people. Rather than shaming children and young people who may have been coerced and criminally exploited to partake in violence, let’s hold those who influence and exploit these young people to account. By working together and listening to young people, we can provide the support they need to give them the best chance in life.
For any child, young person, parent or caregiver who needs additional support or simply needs someone to talk to, you can find a list of your local organisations at www.familysupportni.gov.uk or search ‘Family Support NI’ and click on the purple ‘family support’ search button. You can also contact Barnardo’s NI on 028 9067 2366.
