In advance of the Domestic Abuse Bill reaching committee stage in the House of Lords today (January 25) Barnardo's warned about the risk the Bill will create a two-tier system.
Barnardo’s Chief Executive Javed Khan said: “The trauma of domestic abuse can have a devastating impact on children’s lives and futures. The Domestic Abuse Bill, which is being debated by Peers today, is a unique opportunity to tackle this horrific crime and to make sure that all victims, including children, can access the support they need. However, to achieve this the Bill must be strengthened before it becomes law.
“As it stands the Bill risks creating a two-tier system - with adults and children living in refuges having access to specialist services, but the majority of victims who remain in the family home falling through the cracks. I’m urging the House of Lords to support a cross-party amendment – backed by charities supporting women and children – which creates a clear duty on public authorities to provide support for all victims, regardless of their age or where they live.
“There is also an urgent need to make the family court process safer for children and more responsive to their needs. We stand ready to work with the Government and the courts system to achieve this.
"We know from experience that with the right support, children who experience domestic abuse can recover and go on to have a positive future and that’s why it is so important to get the Bill right.”
