Barnardo's responds to the new Tobacco and Vapes Bill.
A new Tobacco and Vapes Bill has been introduced to Parliament this week as part of the Government's efforts to stop children and young people smoking or vaping. It aims to restrict the sale of vape flavours, ensure packaging is less appealing to children and move them out of lines of sight for children and young people in shops. It could also introduce on the spot fines for retailers who sell to those under 18 years old.
Lynn Perry MBE, CEO of Barnardo’s, said:
“It has long been a concern that children and young people are damaging their health by smoking and vaping. We know how harmful smoking is and there is increasing awareness of the damage caused by vaping.
“We also know that withdrawal from products which contain highly addictive nicotine can cause anxiety, headaches and difficulty concentrating. During a crippling youth mental health crisis, this is the last thing our children and young people need.
“The best way to avoid the damage smoking and vaping can cause is to never start. The introduction of the Tobacco and Vapes Bill is a positive step forward for child health which we welcome as part of the Government’s commitment to a smokefree generation.”
