Barnardo's has responded to Government plans to make changes to asylum system.
Barnardo’s Chief Executive Lynn Perry MBE said:
“Any changes to the asylum system must ensure child victims of modern slavery and labour exploitation will be identified and supported.
“Otherwise, these highly vulnerable young people could face deportation without the adequate protection and support afforded through the National Referral Mechanism, putting them at real risk of further exploitation and trafficking.”
“The National Referral Mechanism helps to identify and refer potential victims of modern slavery and ensure they receive protection and support. Almost four in 10 referrals are for children.
“We are calling on the Government to ensure these vulnerable children are protected and supported when considering changes to the Modern Slavery Act and immigration legislation.”
