RSE: have your say

Help ensure young people are taught about relationships, sex and health in a way that equips them for real life

The story so far

The UK Government has just published new draft relationships and sex education (RSE) and health education guidance. We’ve campaigned for this and are really pleased that it now includes vital issues such as consent in the real and virtual world, mental health and wellbeing, healthy relationships and staying safe online.

The next step is to make sure that the guidance for teaching about relationships, sex and health reflects what young people are asking for.

What should high-quality relationships, sex and health education include?

Young people told us that for RSE to equip them for real life it should:

  • cover topics like consent, grooming, LGTBQ+ relationships and gender identities
  • consider the impact some topics might have on young people, especially issues such as abuse or relational breakdown
  • have enough time dedicated to it so that they feel have enough time to talk about the topics
  • cover topics like money management in a way that will help them to keep on top of their personal finances
  • be taught in an age-appropriate way and cover topics like periods and sexually transmitted infections early enough that young people feel prepared for the future

“I mean, [RSE should include] like a group session, like all kids being able to be around a table like this. Being able to talk about feelings…That’s what schools need now, to be able to talk about it. Everyone’s got their own opinions.”

You can help

The guidance has been published and the Government is asking for your views on what teaching about relationships, sex and health should include. They want views from everyone - not just teachers or specialists. This is your chance to tell them what you think.

We believe that all children and young people should have the chance to develop skills to build healthy relationships – if you do too, share your thoughts on the guidance now.
