This qualitative research highlights the importance of consistent, one-to-one support from a Barnardo’s worker for promoting the mental health and wellbeing of children involved in criminal justice processes relating to sexual exploitation and abuse.

The findings show the importance of having support planned from the outset of investigations and prepared for each stage of the criminal justice process. Five elements are identified as central to helping children and young people cope with the emotional stress they experience – having a sense of self control, reliance on support networks, support for physical and emotional health, practical support, and safeguarding.
